Sigrid Undset, Kristin Lavransdatter
11:00-12:00
Otto Reinert
Room 112
The Norwegian author Sigrid Undset won the Nobel Prize in 1928 for two massive historical novels about Norway in the late middle ages. Kristin Lavransdatter is one of them. The physical, social, and political realities of medieval Norway are the background for a love story that sets erotic passion against guilt and remorse, human will against God’s. In a seamless fusion of fiction and history, the story resonates with timeless moral issues. In her own time, Undset was an international bestseller. The modern judgment that her psychological realism in a historical setting is overloaded with detail, anachronistic, elitist, and old-fashioned - is ripe for reconsideration.
