The Civil War: Beyond the Battles
9:30-10:30
Pete Mazza
Room 103

While the Civil War often evokes references to names of battles and generals, there lies within the story of the conflict a series of failed attempts to reach political, social and economic compromises that could have avoided the war. During the war years we will see the changing objectives and motivation of the Union, the near intervention of England, France and Russia, the political dilemmas of Lincoln, the political and economic implications of several military campaigns, the collapse of the confederacy and the war’s legacy for the next century. We will also explore the personalities and characteristics of the military and civilian leaders whose decisions and policies influenced the conduct of the war and the peace that followed.

Beginning Bridge
10:00-11:30
Ted Szatrowski
Room 109

This class is for bridge players who are beginners and/or have some bridge knowledge and wish to polish their skills. We play bridge for fun, and downplay the competitive aspects. You will make new friends, improve your memory, and have a wonderful time. Six-table max.

Ted will teach double sessions (9:00-12:00) beginning Oct. 29 through Nov.16. The room is available 10:00-11:30 beginning Oct. 1 for students who want to play on their own.

bulletA History of Russia from Peter the Great to Gorbachev
1:00-2:30
Henry T. Bernstein

Not so long ago, the USSR was a great American preoccupation. What is the background for a transformation of the USSR into post-Gorbachev Russia? Under his successors will Russia’s development remain benign?

A three-quarter course based on videotaped lectures by Professor Mark Steinberg of the University of Illinois. Fall Quarter covers Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, the Pugachev uprising, Nicholai Novikov and moral criticism, Alexander I, the Decembrist Rebellion, Nicholas I, Pushkin, the Intelligentsia, Belinski and the Westernizers, Alexander II, the Nihilists, Populists and Marxists.
